@Pat: The Pamir Highway is terrific. Visually stunning and fun people, particularly when you go off track in the Wakhan Valley and along the border of Afghanistan. No place for a vegetarian. Though the same can be said for much of Central Asia. And if you are an omnivore, be prepared for yak butter, yak yogurt and some yak steak.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend a quick read of our 3-part series entitled Peak Experiences in the Pamir Mountains to get a better idea of what to expect.

If you have any other questions, let us know. Have a great time. We'll be interested to hear how your journey goes.

I'm going on a tour, "The Pamir Highway", in August 2011, during Ramadan. Have been wondering how / what /when I will eat then, so enjoyed your account. No place for a vegetarian! (I am an omnivore, willing to try even fresh goat if that's what's offered.)

Tim, I'm laughing...and very sorry to hear that. Something tells me that you are not alone. File this all under "what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger."
