@Kat: You are welcome. Glad you are enjoying the site. The Baku-Turkmenbashi ferry is a bit iffy, but in our experience it departed and arrived more or less on time. The trick is to talk to locals and actually pay a visit to the ferry office to see what the ship's recent travel history has been. Thanks for this post! My boyfriend and I are looking to go to Central Asia and have heard that the ferry sometimes doesn’t appear for weeks. Also, great news on Turkmenistan. Thanks for this blog, I really enjoy it!

Hey Robbie,
I will certainly like to learn from your experience as i am planning to do the same early summer 2010. I have travelled Jeddah to london, recently and it was great. I have previously done Jeddah to Egypt, Syria, Omman, Turkey and more and all by car. This journey Jeddah to Central Asia is very appealing to me and specially by Car. I have a Landcruiser Prado and it was wonderfull on recent journey to UK via Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France and finally UK. I wanted to go to Iran for which I had Visa from UK. However, my car papers were not in order so I had to return after crossing the border at Dogubayezit. What a shame. Anyway I might try it out again for a trip to central asia.
Please do keep me posted specially Visas and car paperwork.

@Robbie: I'm afraid I have no idea what the cost is to take a car on the ferry. Try contacting Stantours to get an estimate - they helped several overland travelers with visa and paperwork during our visit and might have an idea of the cost. Enjoy your trip!

Hey, I’m taking this ferry in the summer (or plan to at least…) and am planning on taking a car across with me. I don’t suppose you know a rough estimate of the cost on this? I’ve been looking everywhere in an effort to attempt a budget, and this is one of the last things I have to find out. Any guesses would be welcome!
