Panorama of the Week: Some Thai Beach Time
Recently, we’ve been spending time on a beach on an island in Thailand. So you might be thinking, “They’ve gone soft.”
Perhaps.
But we missed being near water and having the space — both physical and mental — that comes with looking out over long, wide horizons. There’s a certain calm it affords, a certain clarity.
Open up the panorama below to see why.

For best panorama viewing results, press fullscreen (four arrows) and navigate around with your mouse.
What about you? Do beaches and horizons have the same effect on you?
Oh yeah, any guesses as to which beach in Thailand this is? A mango shake to the winner.

I can’t name the beach, but I sure wouldn’t mind meeting you there for that mango smoothie!

@Bessie: Here’s to hoping our paths cross sometime soon at the intersection of mango and pineapple shakes.
@Dee: I just checked the weather in your part of the world to see how bad it is. I had no idea. Now I completely get your urgency.

Most definitely! I have found that living near a body of water has such a calming effect. When you have a lot on your mind you can just walk down to the water and somehow all the mental clutter dissipates into the horizon. Now that I am in a landlocked country I find that having a room with a good view (mine has lots of flowering tree tops) has the same effect. There is a reason people go crazy in cubicles!

@Natalia: Perhaps part of the calming effect with big horizons is the perspective of how small we are in relation to the whole world and mother nature. Maybe that’s what helps put the mental clutter in its place. I’m glad to hear that you’ve found a way to get this calm and clarity in Paraguay. It definitely helps with writing

Love your panoramic shots! Which program are you using? (for the photo display above)
We all have those days when we just want some tranquility to clear our minds – I came home to do that but wondering if I made the right choice!

That sounds like utter bliss grabbing some Thai Beach Time! I’d love to.

@Nellie: We use Autopano Giga to stitch the pictures into a panoramic photo and then Autopano Tour to create what you see above. We’ll be writing this all up in the next year, so stay tuned!
Time with family can provide tranquility, too
@Spencer: It is pretty nice to work in a bit of Thai Beach time here and there. It had been about 2 years for us, so we definitely don’t take it for granted.

Oh.. the beach… I hope one day to have a house by the beach, so I can hear the waves and watch the moon rise with the breeze.

@Sasha: When you get that house by the beach, be sure to let us know so we can visit
Your comment reminds me that when I was at university, I had a recording of waves that I would listen to as I fell asleep. A little bit like white noise, but better I’d like to think.

Alright, I give up! Where is that beach?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:42 pm
@Josh: It’s Ao Nang, on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand.

Is Ao Nang near Karon, Phuket? I’m going tomorrow!!!
January 10th, 2012 at 6:44 pm
@Andrea: If 3 hours by car is near, then it’s near. Ao Nang is right by Krabi, one of our favorite places in that area:

If you get a chance, be sure to rent motorbikes and take a ride north of Krabi towards Phang Nga. Beautiful landscape.
