Happy 4th of July! As the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped in honor of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, we share a panorama from a past visit to Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market.
When we take photographs in markets around the world, locals often ask us, “Why are you so excited by our market? Don’t you have one at home?”
While we have yet to find a fresh market in the United States akin to what we’ve seen in Guatemala, Laos, and Uzbekistan, we have visited stateside farmers’ markets in places like Ann Arbor, Jacksonville, and Philadelphia.

These days, much of Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market consists of food stalls serving prepared food, whether it be iconic Philly cheesesteak sandwiches or more worldly Thai curries. However, true to local roots, Amish specialties and a taste of the Pennsylvania Dutch can still be had.
However you slice it, wherever you dish it out — if you’re celebrating, we wish you a Happy 4th of July!
