Panorama of the Week: American Thanksgiving at Home

 Filed Under:  Panorama, United States by Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott

It’s a long road home.

Over the course of five days last weekend, we made our way from Iran to Turkey to Germany to the United States by two trains, a boat, two planes and a car — arriving home in time to spend Thanksgiving with family.

And for this, we are thankful.

Thanksgiving, the quintessential American holiday. Also our personal favorite. Whereas Christmas for many is about presents, Thanksgiving for us is about presence. The focus: food and family.

As you see from the panorama below, today’s Thanksgiving meal was an exceptional feast of roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie — just to name a few. A culinary combination that ranks as one of our all-time favorite meals.

So with full stomachs and happy hearts, we wish all our American friends a Happy Thanksgiving!

    Dan and Audrey,
    How long are you “home” for? We live in Clarks Summit and have been following your blog since the Times Tribune published the article about you both a few years back. And we came to hear you speak at the Anthology bookstore two summers ago. Would love to meet you face to face if you are ever available when you are in our area. Keep writing!

    First off, a belated Happy Thanksgiving back at everyone. Was a busy one…that’s why I’m just now responding.

    @Alex: Thank you! We know well what it means to miss family on Thanksgiving.

    @Harold: A shout out from NEPA. We had great weather this year, didn’t we. Loved it. By the way, we’ll be skulking around First Friday if you happen to be in town.

    @TOB: My Scranton, PA family history predates Dunder Mifflin days by a couple of decades. It’s kinda’ nice, though, when I say “Scranton”, I get fewer references to a truckful of bananas and more references to The Office. Thanks for the kitchen compliment — my dad and stepmom are responsible for its redoing from what was a crumbling farmhouse.

    @Heather: Thank you for your comment! Glad you enjoyed the bent-eye view of turkey and trimmings.

    @Mark: Funny. I never thought of it as Bavarian, but those ceiling beams are probably what do it.

    @Sutapa: It’s a cozy kitchen for sure. One of those places where most of the house business (including visitors) seems to take place.

    @Amy: Thanks! Here’s the real story of Scranton.

    @Lola: ‘Twas.

    @Joy: “Keep writing”…that’s our intent. As for plans, I think we’ll be skulking around First Friday, if you happen to be in town for it.
