While waiting for the bus in Lanzhou, we dropped in at a friendly-looking restaurant without a stroke of English on its menu. We just pointed to "We are vegetarians" in our phrase book and this is what they brought us. A light dish of cabbage, mushrooms and other veg bits, it was surprisingly tasty. By the way, we're not really vegetarians, but we tend to be less frightened of mystery vegetables than we are of mystery meat.
