What you are seeing here in this not-so-great photo are all mosaics. The inside of the church is covered in intricate mosaics from top to bottom dating from almost 1000 years ago. Monreale was closed up and locked for centuries when it wasn't in use. It is one of the most amazing churches we've ever seen. Highly recommended to take the short trip from Palermo to visit for the day.
