The Lampang Elephant Conservation Center, located just outside of Chiang Mai, takes care of and trains redundant working elephants who no longer have a working place in the forests (replaced by machinery). The trainer (mahout) has a very strong relationship with the elephant, bathing it each day and controling it with voice commands and quick knabs behind its ears. At the center, it's possible to stay for a couple of days and take a mahout crash course. Highly recommended over the other elephant tours offered in Chiang Mai.
