Kashgar and Urumqi: On the Edge of China

«« | « BACK page 1 of 2 NEXT » | »»

We crossed into China from Kyrgyzstan and began our journey across China from west to east. The western part of China, Xinjiang Province, is considered the "frontier," both economically and developmentally.

Kashgar arguably appears as though it belongs more in Central Asia than China. It's population is still 90% Uighur (an ethnic Turkic group), but the Han Chinese population grows each year. Visit soon before more of Kashgar's old town becomes renovated and is taken over by shopping centers.

Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Province and has, by most accounts, been rebuilt in the last five years. Skyscrapers consume most of the visual space downtown, but the city still features a pleasant laid-back feel.

This woman had teary eyes from chopping mounds of onions for somsas (meat filled pastries). Our concern grew when we spied her reddish hands. The tinted rings on her fingers are due to henna, not blood. ..Taken in Kashgar, China..© www.uncorneredmarket.com
