A Tibetan Pilgrimage - Xiahe, China

«« | « BACK page 1 of 2 NEXT » | »»

Our visit to the village of Xiahe in China's Gansu Province offered us a glimpse of Tibetan life (outside of Tibet). Our arrival very fortunately coincided with a Tibetan festival and monastic winter opera (Cham) at the Labrang Monastery.

The town's dramatic backdrop and already colorful diversity were accented by throngs of visiting Tibetan pilgrims from Gansu and the neighboring provinces of Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, and Sichuan.

Labrang Monastery is a center of the Gelugpa (or yellow hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism; it's considered the most important Tibetan monastery outside of Tibet.

Enjoy the color!
