Visiting the Warriors in Xi'an, China
Xi'an in China's Shaanxi Province was the first major tourist hub we visited in China.
For us, it was just as interesting to observe the behavior of Chinese tourists - and note how the Chinese government approaches tourism and creates tourist environments - as it was to visit the actual historic sites themselves.
Xi'an finds itself on most traditional tourist itineraries because it's the home of the 2,000+ year-old Terra Cotta Warriors of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Viewing Pit #1 of the Terra Cotta Warriors
The people on the edge of the pit give you a sense of the pit's size. This photo only shows a small segment of the entire pit. Apparently 8,099 statues were commissioned by the emperor for his mausoleum. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Tourism, Chinese Style

Lunch on the Go
These green-filled hot pockets were so delicious we kept coming back for more. We could see the ingredients clearly, so no need for pictionary to the rescue. Taken in Xi'an, China.
Dim Sum and Scallop Feast
The Xin Wang Cantonese Dim Sum restaurant in Xi'an has an interesting twist: it only serves dim sum between 9:30 PM and 2 AM. It was worth the wait though - the dim sum was exceptional and possibly the best we'd tasted during our travels in northern China (and Thailand and Malaysia). Big chunks of shrimp, delicate flavorings and perfectly steamed.Yes, we know...we must make our way to Guangdong and Hong Kong for REAL dim sum. © www.uncorneredmarket.com
