Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, served as our first stop on our return trip to China in June 2008.
Chengdu quickly became our favorite big city in China - friendly people, relaxing teahouses, fiery cuisine, and pandas. As in all of China, the city is developing quickly. Our favorite area - a tiny traditional neighborhood of old Chengdu behind the Shangri-La hotel - was quickly being demolished in favor of new buildings. For all we know, it may be gone already.
