The Five Philharmonias of Baku

Just about every trip through Baku seemed to take us past the Baku Philharmonia. Each time our host Yahya would drive by this building, he'd joke about the growing number of Philharmonias Baku has these days. This European styled building sits atop City Park with the old town below. Read about our visit to Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan.

Calling All Baku

Baku's TV tower looms over Martyr's Alley (Shahidlar Xiyabani) and the monument of the eternal flame. Martyr's Alley was originally a cemetery to honor those (about 130) who died on 20 January 1990 at the hands of the Soviet Red Army. The cemetery now includes those who died in the Nagorno Karabagh conflict. ..It's a peaceful cemetery whose headstones are adorned with etched faces of the deceased. Caviar Tasting

If you buy caviar at the Taza Bazaar, it feels like you are doing something illegal...which you kind of are. The government controls the caviar business, but crafty entrepreneurs manage to get their hands on some anyway. They sidle up to tourists upon their entry into the market, whispering caviar under their breath. Then you are taken to a small room with a refrigerator for tasting and buying...Our favorite was the Beluga caviar - smooth and not too salty. At $50 per jar, it's spendy, but a bargain if compared to prices abroad.

Neolithic Scratchings

In addition to mud volcanoes, Gobustan is also home to Neolithic cave drawings (also a UNESCO site) full of people, boats, animals and things that we couldn't quite discern. Some believe that the drawings indicate that the people who lived here were linked with the ancestral Vikings. Read about our visit to Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan.
