New Age Christmas - Beijing

Trying to get into the holiday spirit at The Place in Beijing. Not quite the same as a European Christmas Market. Read more about European Christmas Markets and Reflections on Dresden's Christmas Market.

On the Rise - Beijing's CCTV Building

The new CCTV (Chinese Government TV Station) in Beijing is to be finished before the Olympics in August 2008. When we visited in November 2007, there was still a long ways to go. Construction teams worked on it 24-hours a day; we would watch the sparks fly into the air in the middle of the night from our friend's 26th floor apartment nearby. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

A Mighty Wall

We were humbled by the fluidity and immense size of China's Great Wall. It just keeps going and going - over hill, mountain and vale. Taken at Jinshanling, outside of Beijing, China. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

A Fluid Wall

We were amazed at how fluid the Great Wall was, literally following the contour of the hills. We arrived on a cold, but clear, December day. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Changing Seasons on the Great Wall

Our trip to the Great Wall at Jinshanling outside of Beijing occurred in mid-December as autumn found itself replaced by winter. ..A fresh layer of snow covered most of the wall and made for some treacherous climbs. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Young Chinese Patriot

When the mother first approached Audrey with her camera, Audrey thought she wanted her to photograph the whole family. Turns out she wanted a photo of her Audrey with her child and husband. So, Audrey reciprocated and took a photo of the family. Taken near Tienamen Square near the new theatre. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Have Yourself a Very Beijing Christmas!

What says Bejing Christmas more than a Christmas tree decked out in lights under the world's - correction ASIA'S - largest LED screen (250x30 meters)? Taken at The Place in Beijing. Read more about European Christmas Markets and Reflections on Dresden's Christmas Market.

Fiery Sichuan Green Beans

One of our favorite dishes in all of China! This dish came from a hole-in-the-wall place on a side street in Chao Yang business district in Beijing. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Kung Pao Chicken, Beijing Style

A refined variation of the Sichuan classic chicken dish - Kung Pao chicken - at Xiao Wang's Home Restaurant in the ChaoYang district of Beijing, China. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Crunchy Starfish Stack

We didn't try the grilled starfish. Frankly, it looked rather crunchy without too much meat. If so, very much in keeping with the texture focus of Chinese cuisine.Taken at Wangfujing Snack Street in Beijing. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Marinated Lotus Root

A delicious starter of marinated lotus root at Xiao Wang's Home Restaurant in the ChaoYang district of Beijing, China. ..Thinly sliced, not too much vinegar in the marinade. A great palate cleanser. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

High-Tech Christmas in Beijing

Christmas has a special feel in Beijing. The Place is decked out in the Christmas spirit while its LED screen (the largest in the world) takes us on the tour of the solar system. Read more about European Christmas Markets and Reflections on Dresden's Christmas Market.

Best Value Lunch - People 8

We were tipped off to this quasi-secret lunch place by our Beijing friends. Called People 8, it is a fancy Japanese restaurant decked out in black (you need a flashlight to navigate the bathroom). For whatever reason, they offer a lunch menu for 38 Yuan ($5) that includes two main dishes like the one you see here.
