From atop the Asinelli Tower, we could hear the diffused sounds of Italian piazza life - bands playing, children yelling, and everyone else enjoying it all. The church of San Luca is on the top of the hill in the distance. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

A sfoglini is a workshop where fresh pasta and tortelloni and tortellini are made by hand. The first step: roll out the dough paper-thin.© www.uncorneredmarket.com

This church was built in the 1700s and is at the top of the longest portico that leads 2.5 miles down to the Saragozza gates. It was very active on Sunday morning, with mass held almost every hour. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Known as porticos, these arcades play a prominent role in Bologna's architecture. This arcade led up to our B&B, and if you followed it for 2.5 miles (666 arches), it led to the San Luca church overlooking the city. The porticos were built in the middle ages when there was an influx of students for the University and housing was needed. The porticos extended the width of the buildings, and the students' rooms were built on top. © www.uncorneredmarket.com
