We have no idea where all these classic American cars are the rest of the year, but on May 8th, the main square in Plzen is filled with them.Liberation Day (World War II) is celebrated a little differently in Plzen than in other parts of the Czech Republic. American troops freed Plzen from the Nazis, while Prague and other areas were freed by Soviet troops. The folks in Plzen celebrate the day and honor American troops with a model American army camp, a show of classic and antique American cars, country music, and a show of American and Czech flags flying everywhere. As an American, it's quite moving to see.© www.uncorneredmarket.com
Czech borderlands, the domain of Vietnamese junk shops, are bursting with gnomes, trucs, baubles, knick-knacks and trinkets. Desolation defines this infrequently-used border crossing between the Czech Republic and Austria, thus the perpetual 60%-off liquidation sale. Who knew Austrian demand for this stuff was so high?© www.uncorneredmarket.com

One of the many pho stands at Prague's Vietnamese market in Malesice. Having spent a month in Vietnam earlier this year, we can attest that this pho is pretty authentic. Make sure you ask for a plate of fresh herbs.
This isn't Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. We frequented these markets to stock up on Thai curry pastes, fresh Thai basil and cilantro, and to get our fill of large bowls of pho. Dan became such a regular at one food shop that when he'd walk in, the woman would ask what he was cooking that day and would give advice on ingredients and recipes.© www.uncorneredmarket.com
Yes, this is still Prague. The Vietnamese market is the place to go for hard-to-find ingredients like Thai basil and Asian eggplants.
