Desert Blossom

Neolithic Scratchings

In addition to mud volcanoes, Gobustan is also home to Neolithic cave drawings (also a UNESCO site) full of people, boats, animals and things that we couldn't quite discern. Some believe that the drawings indicate that the people who lived here were linked with the ancestral Vikings. Read about our visit to Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan.  

Cold Mud Volcano

These cold mud volcanoes are located about an hour from Baku, just a few kilometers from the town of Gobustan. The mud just gurgles and bubbles continuously. The taxi driver told us that the volcanoes become very active in winter and after heavy rains. Read about our visit to Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan.

It's hard to believe that thousands of years ago this was a fertile area where Neolithic man lived. Now it is HOT! And it sure doesn't look very fertile to us.
