In addition to mud volcanoes, Gobustan is also home to Neolithic cave drawings (also a UNESCO site) full of people, boats, animals and things that we couldn't quite discern. These cold mud volcanoes are located about an hour from Baku, just a few kilometers from the town of Gobustan. The mud just gurgles and bubbles continuously. It's hard to believe that thousands of years ago this was a fertile area where Neolithic man lived. Now it is HOT! And it sure doesn't look very fertile to us.
