We came upon this medieval abbey while hiking from Camogli to Portofino. The only way to get to the beach here is by foot or by boat. After a long hike during a hot day, we had visions of friendly monks welcoming us with cold frothy beers. There were no beers or monks to meet us, but the refreshing water rejuvenated us for the rest of the hike.

When we saw the sign difficile at the beginning of the hike from Camogli to Portofino, we just shrugged it off thinking the Italians were being overly dramatic. While hanging on to chains bolted into the cliff face shortly thereafter, we understood their meaning. In addition to the occasional adrenaline rush, this hike offered some fantastic views above the Mediterranean Sea.© www.uncorneredmarket.com
