Sary Tash is the last main village in Kyrgyzstan before the road forks. One road leads to Tajikistan (our route) while the other road heads over the Irkeshtam Pass to China (Kashgar). Just before sunset, we took a walk around the village. Although it was beautiful, it was bitterly cold; the wind made easy work of our many layers.Read more about our adventures in the Pamirs.

These girls greeted us on the road in the southern Kyrgyz village of Sary Tash. We soon learned why their cheeks were so red: wind-burn. A brutally cold wind picks up in the evenings; it can stop you in your tracks. The night we stayed, the temperature dropped to 15 degrees Celsius below zero. And it was only early autumn.
