Tibetan Drums

These drums provided the rhythm for the Tibetan Opera at Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, China. We never did figure out the reason for the festival; no one spoke English well enough to explain it to us. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.

Tibetan Opera

We were fortunate to arrive in Xiahe, China, on the eve of a Buddhist festival. The next day included a Tibetan Opera featuring elaborate costumes, bright colors, exotic sounds and heaps of ritual. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.

All Dressed Up

These young monks looked quite smashing in their embroidered shawls and bright hats. Taken at Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, China. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.

Cue the Novices

Finally, the novices get to do their bit in the Tibetan Opera. Take at Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, China. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.

Dramatic Finale

Unfortunately, no one spoke English enough (or we didn't speak Tibetan enough) to explain to us what was going on with the slow movements and the knife. We used our brilliant imaginations to fill in the blanks. Taken at Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, China. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.

What Do We Do Next?

These young novices took part in the Tibetan Opera, but they seemed to have forgotten their moves here. They never quite knew what to do next, but they improvised well enough for us. Taken at Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, China. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.

Acting!

Characters in the Tibetan Opera were colorfully and elaborately decked out and moved slowly and deliberately. Taken in Xiahe, China. Read more about our visit to Xiahe, China.
