Bulldog Kisses - Clifton Days, Virginia
A stand at Clifton Days was selling bulldog kisses for a dollar to earn money for an organization that rescues abandoned bulldogs. As we learned from talking with the woman monitoring the kissing, bulldogs are often abandoned because their respiratory system proves to problematic for some owners. Quite sad, really. The bulldogs on offer for kisses were a handsome bunch, all dressed up for the day. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

Feeding Time Near Ice Lake
Yaks graze on the open fields near Ice Lake (4,600 meters) above Manang. These shaggy creatures only live in high altitudes. Their milk is used to make surprisingly good cheese and yogurt. For us, the hike up to Ice Lake was the most difficult of the entire Annapurna Circuit - an elevation rise of over 1000 meters along steep switchbacks foot-carved out of loose rock and ash. While the lake itself was nothing special, the views across the Annapurna range on the way up made it all worth it. A common sight along the Annapurna Circuit: a group of mules weighed down with everything from cement sacks to beer. Notice the colorful, woven head decorations. These are tough animals. Yaks on the Move!
Yaks bound over the hilltop on the way from Letdar to Thorong Phedi. For big animals, they were surprisingly light on their feet.A bit disconcerting to be facing the stampede. Fortunately, they dodged us as much as we did them. They did, however, almost take out Australian supermodel Gemma Ward along the way.
