Built in 1908, this German Protestant Church still functions as a living church and still has a working German clock and bell system. We believe it's the church Audrey's great-grandparents and their children attended in the early 1900s. Read more about the search for Audrey's grandfather's house and the results of the search.
Rumor is that the Russian Orthodox Church has bad luck because it was built on the site of the remains of Estonia's epoch hero, Kalevipoeg. It always seemed to be under construction of some sort when Audrey lived there.© www.uncorneredmarket.com
Echmiadzin, outside of Yerevan, is the seat of the Patriarch (Catholicos) of the Armenian church. Many Armenians call it their Vatican. All Armenian churches in the world use holy oil that originated from this church. ..The church has an impressive treasury where the remains of apostles and saints are held in silver arm-shaped reliquaries (looks a bit like armor). It also holds remains of Noah's ark (supposedly) and the Holy Cross. Read more about Armenia's sights and churches.

We were told later on that the priest here died not too long ago, but the authorities didn't want him replaced. So, the townsfolk and villagers come to church every Sunday, but they run the ceremony themselves based on memory and the few books they have. The church is in a main town square, so there are street restaurants and street stalls all around. While Audrey was photographing something else, a local older man advised us to go 50 meters down the street to find something truly beautiful. We came across this little church on a side street. He was right. We couldn't go inside, but the exterior was impressive.© www.uncorneredmarket.com

What you are seeing here in this not-so-great photo are all mosaics. The inside of the church is covered in intricate mosaics from top to bottom dating from almost 1000 years ago. Monreale was closed up and locked for centuries when it wasn't in use. It is one of the most amazing churches we've ever seen. Highly recommended to take the short trip from Palermo to visit for the day.© www.uncorneredmarket.com
